Known as the suicide bird because of the male's courtship flight where he flies up in the air and then drops pulling out near the ground and gliding the rest of the way.
Southern ground hornbills are long-living birds, one lived to 70 years in captivity, on a par with the albatross. A pair rears one chick every three years and adults in a group cooperate in rearing the young. They are endangered. Unusually in this group there were a male, female and two chicks, normally there is only one chick successfully reared.
