Southern ground hornbills are long-living birds, one lived to 70 years in captivity, on a par with the albatross. A pair rears one chick every three years and adults in a group cooperate in rearing the young. They are endangered. Unusually in this group there were a male, female and two chicks, normally there is only one chick successfully reared.
